Bandon, Oregon
Bandon is towards the end of the Southern Oregon Coast, close to the California
border. It beckons to artists and tourists alike. It is also an important harbor. The main
export of Bandon is cranberries and cheese; you can see the cranberry bogs at the north and south
ends of town.
Old town Bandon has many art galleries, craft shops, and cafes. There is a Cranberry Festival
in September for all of you cranberry lovers. The town has much to offer, as does the beach. Bandon is
a beachcomber’s paradise with agates, jaspers, and many other semiprecious stones lying in wait on the
beach for some lucky walker or sunbather to pick them up.
Bullards Beach State Park is one mile north of Bandon on Highway 101. This is home to the Coquille River Lighthouse where the Coquille River and Pacific Ocean meet. There is much to do at this park including horseback riding, camping, hiking, beachcombing, and many bicycle trails. If you rise early enough, you also may catch a glimpse of the migrating gray whales from a fantastic viewing spot at the park, Face Rock Wayside. You have the best chance of seeing these incredible, massive creatures March through May and again in December.
If you’ve spent enough time doing "beach stuff" and are ready for a different sort of activity try The West Coast Game Park Walk-Thru Safari. This is located seven miles south on Highway 101 and has more than 75 species of animals and many tame exotic birds. You are allowed to walk among the animals on your own and even feed some of them, as well as pet them. Some of the animals include bears, cougars, leopards, lions, and tiger cubs. Open daily 9-5 March through November, the winter months 9-dusk. Admission $6.50 for adults, lower for various childrens’ ages.
Bandon is a perfect vacationer’s spot, especially if you are on Highway 101 headed south for California. It is a breathtaking area filled with things to do. Make sure it is one of your stops on the Southern Oregon Coast.
Any way you look at it, Bandon is a bevy of historical information, shopping
