Cannon Beach, Oregon
A beautiful view of Haystack
Rock at Cannon Beach
If you are in search of a quaint beach town, this
is it. Cannon Beach is the quintessential beach haven. Driving south on Hemlock
Street (the main drag), the street is lined with specialty shops, clothing shops,
and art galleries. Dotted among the not so "touristy shops" of Cannon Beach are fine
dining establishments including the Zagat rated "The Mango", along with the famous
"Lazy Susan Cafe", and the "Bald Eagle Coffee Shop" where you find many locals getting
their daily hit of fabulous espresso and of course top of the line pastries.
Hotels also line Hemlock Street all the way through town, most with ocean front
viewing, but you can find a few tucked back that are of much more reasonable price.
There are also a host of homes to rent. Yet, be sure to call well in
advance, especially during the busy summer season.
Cannon Beach is the home of Haystack Rock, the largest monolith (for all of you geologists)
in the Western Hemisphere. Surrounding Haystack Rock are wonderful tide pools where you and
your little ones can actually see the amazing sea creatures and touch a living sea anemone.
If you are looking for a scenic picnic spot or hiking trails with a spectacular view,
try Ecola State Park just east of Cannon Beach proper. Ecola Points has many picnic
tables that allow you to have a romantic picnic, a family reunion, or even a wedding.
There is a large grassy area where many seagulls land for the children to feed and can
be a great place to where off a little extra beach energy.
Ecola State park offers you an incredible view of Tillamook Lighthouse that
can only be reached by helicopter. This lighthouse began construction in 1879,
only to be continually battered away by ocean storms until its decommissioning in
1957. It is truly a sight to see.
