Madras, Oregon
Madras is located in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness Area and is a hot spot for
rockhounding for thundereggs, the state rock and agates. With a population of 3,400, it is a
small town with a small town feel. It is surrounded by the Warm Springs Indian Reservation and
has a high desert climate. You likely to find snow here in the winter as it is 2,242 feet in elevation. It has a
beauty all of its own though with rolling brown hills and many activities. There is white water rafting
down the Deschutes River. Oregon River Experiences offers 1-5 day trips from Madras to
Maupin that begin at $65.
Madras is also close to Cove Palisades State Park that encompasses Round Butte Dam and
its reservoir, Lake Billy Chinook. There are three extremely beautiful canyons that have been
carved out by the Deschutes River, The Crooked River and the Metolius River which all meet in the park. This is
a great fishing and camping area with everything from water-skiing to houseboat rentals. The park is open April
through October. If you are a camper this is truly the place to be in Central Oregon.
