Redmond, Oregon
Redmond is just a half hour west of Bend. It is kind of like Bend’s little sister. With an
abundance of Juniper trees, Redmond is an industrial and lumbering center. Redmond is also home
to the Redmond Air Center, a Forest Service smoke jumping and firefighting training center.
Redmond offers the same recreational activities as Bend with white
water rafting, golfing, and fishing in the summer and cross country skiing and downhill skiing at
Mt. Bachelor in the winter.
Petersen’s Rock Gardens are located in Redmond. Here, bridges, terraces, and replicas of
historic structures are built of rock and petrified wood from the region. There is also a display of rare
rocks from the area. The museum is open daily 9-6 and the gardens 9-9 Memorial through Labor Day. Nine to
dusk the rest of the year.
The most famous thing about Redmond though is Smith Rock State Park. Smith Rock beckons
to rock climbers all over the country. It lies beautifully next to the Crooked River. We know many
people adventurous enough to climb Smith Rock and experience a beauty found nowhere else. There are
also areas for picnicking and just enjoying the scenery.
